Mesquite Amateur Day One-I Chose The Wrong Mountains
Round one of the 2011 Mesquite Amateur featured incredible weather, some really good golf, and golf that, well, wasn’t much to write home about.
The Tuesday night dinner featured a U.S. Open theme, with food flavors from the Maryland area, where the Open will be played in two weeks at Congressional Country Club. That followed Monday night’s kickoff dinner, where The Masters was the theme.
Round two for the 538 players in 16 flights over six courses takes place Wednesday. After the third round is completed on Thursday, the top four players in each flight advance to the Championship Round at Casablanca Golf Club on Friday.
Forty states are represented in the field, including Florida, which boasts the fourth most players in the field with 42.
My round had its ups and downs, literally. Huge elevation changes at the Palms Golf Club added mystery to the challenging 6,800-yard layout for our flight, called the Watson. It is for Senior Men 50 to 59 years of age, with single handicaps.
I managed to hit 12 fairways with my new TaylorMade R11 driver, but that is where the good news ends. A total of 40 putts (including one four-putt) led to an 87, and placed this 8-handicapper in the back third of my flight. Prior to the round I was advised that the putts broke toward the mountains. I obviously was choosing the wrong mountains.
