Mesquite Am another great success

By: MichaelJamison on 06/04/11 06:36 PM

The prelims are over now at the 9th Mesquite Amateur golf tournament in Mesquite, NV. The third and final round of regular play ended Thursday under clear skies and mild temperatures. And now the top four finishers in each of 16 flights advance to the championship round Friday morning at the Casablanca Resort course.

Forty states are represented in the field, including Florida, which boasts the fourth most players in the field of 538 players with 42.

Included in the championship round on Friday is one Central Florida competitor. Darren Frost of Lake Mary won the Men’s Division Els Flight, recording the low gross and low net in his flight. He shot rounds of 91 (net 72), 92 (74) and 84 (65) to win his flight by two shots.

My final round proved to be a carbon copy of the second round, except for one really ugly wedge shot from 110 yards on the tough 10th at Falcon Ridge. Somehow I managed to flare the pitch shot right of green – and out of bounds. That led to my only triple bogey of the tournament. But the putter remained hot, and I managed another 81, which left me on the outside looking in on the championship round.

Falcon Ridge provided the best greens of the week for our Watson Flight for Senior Men 50 to 59 years of age, with single digit handicaps. They were true, fast and undulating. Intimidating elevation changes provided the bite to this course.

Next year, a promise: I am going to make it to the Friday Championship Round at Casablaca.
