You see a little bit of everything at the PGA Expo in Las Vegas

By: MichaelJamison on 08/23/11 07:26 PM

Seen and heard at the first day of the PGA Expo in Las Vegas:

A decent turnout greeted the 200-plus exhibitors during opening day of the PGA Expo at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino.

Exhibitors included everything from the “Get Fresh Balls” cream (let your imagination run free) to specialty products like Herbie’s One-Putt Wedge to established companies like Callaway, Tour Edge, adidas and PING.

Among the opening day speakers on main stage was Butch Harmon, who entertained the overflow crowd in his complete at ease manner. Among his fascinating tidbits:

“The first three feet of the golf swing usually determines what kind of shot is going to be hit. When Dustin Johnson hits a bad shot, his tendency is to take the club too far outside at the start. Phil (Mickelson) tends to take it too far inside when he is off.”

Following Harmon was a panel discussion about growing the game of golf. It was comprised of members of the Nevada Golf Alliance, including ING members Eric Dutt of Harrahs Golf and Kip Wolfe of Key Golf Management.

One of Dutt’s comments really struck a cord with the audience during a discussion about golf course operators having to cut costs to lower fees for golfers. Said Eric: “Golf course operators are victims of Sunday afternoon TV golf. What folks see on the PGA Tour coverage – lush green conditions from tee to green – is not practical for their local golf course. But it had become the standard. That is changing. It is just not affordable in a time when the cost of golf is perceived as being too high.”

The two-day PGA Expo concludes Wednesday.
