19th Annual ING Media Awards Presented In 11 Categories; Gary Van Sickle, Ed Travis Capture Two First-Places Each

ORLANDO, FL (January 26, 2011) – Winners were announced and presented in 11 categories Thursday in the 19th Annual ING Media Awards. The presentations took place in ClubING, the ING Hospitality Room, at the PGA Merchandise Show in the Orange County Convention Center.

Gary Van Sickle of Sports Illustrated and freelance writer Ed Travis each won two first-place awards in the contest. Van Sickle won the Competition Writing Category for his piece “The Trials Of Jobe” in Sports Illustrated, and also took top honors in the Opinion Writing Category for his story, “Get Real, USGA.”

Travis took first place in the Equipment Writing Category for a story in New England Golf Monthly entitled “The Best Apps In Golf.” His second winning piece, “Clubmakers Support The Tee It Up Initiative,” was tops in the Business Writing Category and was published in Golf Oklahoma.

The International Network Of Golf is a 22-year-old, non-profit, media-based networking organization whose mission is to enhance and promote communication and education in golf. The group conducts two meetings each year in the spring and fall, where media and industry leaders gather to discuss issues, launch and test new products, enhance their skills and develop relationships.

Media Awards results are determined by three independent judges in each category. Judges use a set of criteria to compare entries, without knowledge (except in the electronic categories) of which media member did the work. The ING Media Awards Committee Chair is Cody Law.

Assured Products, Bridgestone Golf, Gallus Golf, GolfOrlando and PGA Golf Exhibitions sponsored the ING Media Awards program.

ING’s next meeting will be its 22nd Annual ING Spring Conference at Embassy Suites Greenville Golf Resort in Greenville, SC May 20-24. For details, visit www.inggolf.com, or call 407-328-0500.

ABOUT THE ING MEDIA AWARDS

The ING Media Awards program is conducted each year to recognize the best and brightest writers, broadcasters, publishers, editors, producers and photographers.

Entries must have been published or aired between October 1 and September 30 of the particular contest season. The contest is open only to ING members.

First-Place Finishers and Outstanding Achievers receive plaques. The number of outstanding achievers in each category is determined by the number of entries combined with the range of scoring.

The competition includes 13 categories in which individuals are honored: Apparel Writing, Business Writing , Book, Competition Writing, Equipment Writing, Illustration, Golf Instruction Writing, Photography, Profile Writing, Opinion/Editorial Writing, Television, Radio, and Travel Writing.

Any member of the media who is an ING member in good standing or who becomes an ING member on or before October 1 may enter.

Each member may submit up to two entries in each of the categories. The same article can not be entered in more than one category.

ING goes to great lengths to keep the contest fair and without bias. How?

A Category Chair is assigned for each category by the ING Media Awards committee. That person is responsible for selecting three judges for his/her specific category. Chairs are asked to find judges outside of ING membership if at all possible.

All entries, in applicable categories, are stripped of by-lines and other identifying marks BEFORE they are sent to the Category Chair, who then forwards entries to each judge. So even the Category Chairs do not know the identities.

Entries will be judged on a variety of criteria such as conformity with contest topic, content and originality, style, readability, mechanics, technical quality, composition and production values.

A first-place award will be given in each category in which the minimum number of entries is received.

Honorable mentions (Outstanding Achievers) may also be awarded, based upon the number of entries and the range of scoring in the category.
